Aurasma is an augmented reality app for mobile devices that can be used to turn everyday objects into interactive multimedia creations. It’s been used by companies like Disney, Argos, and Budweiser to make their adverts and posters more engaging.
One of the most well-known examples of augmented reality in action is the Pokemon Go phenomenon that swept the mobile world in early 2016. But, Augmented reality has been around for several years and I’ve been experimenting with it for some time.
In 2012 I was looking for a way to make my colleges open evening content more exciting and decided using augmented reality would be a great way to engage the young people visiting the campus.
I produced flyers and posters that were used to introduce and promote some of the services and resources we use with students. Auras were tagged to them so when they were viewed through a smartphone camera they came to life with extra information.
A video of one of these resources can be seen in action in the video below. The posters were very well received by prospective students, and the auras were viewed hundreds of times at each event where they were showcased.
Aurasma is a quick and effective way to create AR resources. As this work expanded staff around the college added AR overlays to classroom worksheets and posters all over the college campus.
